BOPP films project massive demand in Indian packaging industry
Changes in customer dynamics and patterns are witnessed in every sector and food-packaging is no exception. This sector has lately witnessed an increased preference for plastic film and sheets as compared to other flexible packaging materials such as kraft paper, aluminum foil and cellophane film. However, a closer observation will reveal that this trend is slowly gaining ground in non-food packaging applications as well as BOPP films which are being increasing used. Infact, BOPP films represents one of the high-growth segments in the global plastic film and sheets industry.
It is interesting to note that growth in the BOPP film market is driven by rising demand from Asia, particularly from China and India, and other developing regions such as Latin America and Eastern Europe. The Asia-Pacific represents immense growth potential, capturing the largest slice of the global market, as stated by the new market research report on Plastic Film and Sheets. Developing markets such as China, India and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region are rapidly emerging as dominant forces in the world plastic film & sheets industry. The trend can be witnessed in BOPP film, in which China replaced the US as the largest producer and consumer. Asia-Pacific region is also primed to race ahead at the strongest compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3% through 2017.
Contributing a lion’s share to this emerging Indian flexible market is Uflex Ltd., India’s largest flexible packaging company. Uflex has been producing a variety of value added flexible packaging material , sophisticated product films like BOPET, BOPP and CPP, state-of-the-art packaging and converting machines, rotogravure cylinders, thereby providing world class flexible packaging solutions to its customers in both the domestic and international market at competitive prices.
In fact, Uflex has commissioned an AL-OX coater for packaging films at its Egypt plant near Cairo. In fact, as part of its expansion plans, Uflex is ramping up production capacities for BOPP films to 35,000 TPA 30,000 TPA of PET (Polyester) and 12,000 TPA of CPP films aggregating to total capacity of 77,000 TPA. The company's planned investments in Egypt are pegged at $135 million. The first line of this expansion involves adding capacities in BOPP films. The site of the plant already houses an 8.7 meter wide, 500-mpm, state-of-the-art BOPP Film plant, which is already one of the world’s largest packaging film lines, capable of turning out 35,000 MT per year.
