Julie and Julia

Being a food and wine critic, some might even say basher, and never having written a movie review before, I approached this task with great trepidation so here goes. If you’re a foodie and love to eat and cook, hell, even if you’ve never tasted food and can’t spell the word kitchen, you should love this movie even if you’ve never been in love. It’s all about the true joy of cooking and more so the true joy of living. Meryl Streep plays Julia Child in Paris as she learns to cook. Streep’s rendition of Child is a brilliant caricature but probably not as good as Child’s own caricature of herself. Dan Akroyd’s caricature of Child on Saturday Night Live, in which he is carving a chicken and ends up bleeding all over the set and passing out from blood loss, appears in the movie.

The story is actually two stories in one as Amy Adams plays Julie in modern day New York who has decided to do something with her life and cook all 540 recipes in Child’s cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, in 365 days.

Forget the popcorn for this one and grab a bottle of French Bordeaux and some Brie and bread and enjoy. YUM!
