A Summer Getaway to Cannes

Whenever someone mentions Cannes, your first thought will probably be of the annual film festival that takes place there around May each year. But Cannes has plenty more to offer than simply a window on the latest films to be released. It is worth considering as a destination for a short break this summer.

One of the best bits about staying in Cannes is that you don’t really need any form of transport other than your own two feet to get around. If you walk everywhere, it is quite common to stumble over places that are worthy of further exploration and you will get the opportunity to explore the marina more easily too. You can indulge in some waterfront walks to take a closer look at some of the expensive yachts you’ll find there, as well as taking the time to sit back with a coffee to watch people passing by.

Make sure you head for the Promenade de la Croisette while you are down at the waterfront, since this is one of the most popular parts of Cannes. This translates into Avenue of the Little Cross. You will be close to the beaches as you walk along here, and there are plenty of cafes to stop in for sustenance if you get thirsty.

Once you have had your fill of the waterfront, you should take the opportunity to head up to the old part of Cannes. This is situated slightly away from the marina area and there is a hill to climb before you get there. It is definitely worth making the journey so you can see Le Suquet – the old town – for yourself.

The first thing you will notice about Le Suquet is the cobbled lane called Rue St Antoine. The many restaurants located there provide you with plenty of opportunities to replenish your energy after the steep walk. You can also head for Rue du Suquet, which is one of the roads in the old town that provides a superb view back down to the marina. Indeed this is one of the reasons why people climb up to the old town in the first place – that and the ability to see the ruins of the castle that await you from the very top. Again these offer superb views.

Once you have had your fill of the sights of Cannes, you can make the most of the incredible number of boutiques and shops there as well. Many people book into a hotel in Cannes so they can enjoy spending some cash in these shops, as well as finding out a little more about the history of the destination. No matter what you would rather do on a holiday to Cannes, there is no doubt it has a lot to offer.
