Top 8 Ways to Shop Green and Save

Call me a tree hugger, but I like buying products that are good for the environment. And, in many ways, that also translates into healthier options for my family. Unfortunately, buying green can oftentimes mean spending more green. A lot more green. I mean, have you seen the cost of organic milk lately? Over $4 for a half gallon! So, over the years, I’ve learned to be smarter about saving money so that I can feel good not only about the product, but the value I’ve found in purchasing it at a discount.

.Deals! Deals! Deals! This is really a no brainer. Keep your eyes open for a great deal and take advantage when it comes around. Fortunately, there are sites like uDealium.com, so I don’t have to wait around for the next store sale. I just type the store or product in the uDealium.com and up pops a discount code. You will be bowled over by the sheer number of deals for green, natural or organic products. Retailer newsletters and emails are also a great source for money savings; sales fly into my inbox daily.

.Buy one get one free. I always stock up on organics anytime I see this magic phrase at my store. This simple action adds bulk to my pantry…and my wallet!

.Get a rewards card. Everyone from the big box grocery stores to the small health food folks offer great shopping rewards, simply for being a loyal customer. Take advantage and save.

.Buy local. Sometimes, going straight to the source will save you some money by cutting out the middleman. And, as a bonus, reduce your carbon footprint by eliminating the travel between manufacturing and retail. Farmers markets and local producers are often willing to negotiate for discounts on the spot, especially if you buy volume.

.Comparison shop: I’ve found that my favorite green cleaning products are available at two very different price points, depending on the store. Do you research and buy smart.

.Buy in bulk: Many warehouse stores, and local health food stores, offer the ability to buy by the case. This is a short-term investment that pays off in great savings down the road!

.Buy in season: Out-of-season foods can cost more due to shipping costs. Look for seasonal items, which will often be on sale, then buy in bulk and freeze or preserve for future months when supply is scarce.

.Redirect your savings: Reward your savvy shopping habits (I just saved another $65 in household purchases through uDealium.com!) by putting that money toward organic items that you would’ve normally skipped due to cost.
