Hue City Centre Shopping

The city of Hue does not disappoint in terms of shopping and it specialises in the tradition of artisan and craft ware, for which Hue City is famous and more especially embroidery which has been a long-standing industry since the 15th century. The locally crafted embroidery work is all made by hand and should be seen to be believed. Often shopkeepers are happy to allow the visitor to see the work actually being carried out which is, in most cases, in the same premises as the shop. Embroidery pieces are usually framed nowadays although it is still possible to buy larger pieces for tablecloths and throws. Bespoke tailoring is also a skill very much prevalent in Hue.

Le Loi Street is where you can find souvenirs of all kinds and there are some retail gems hidden away for the discerning shopper to flush out. Be aware that the vendors do expect haggling though, so do have a go, even if it makes you uncomfortable at first; after a few tries when you ‘win’ a few you will see haggling as the fun experience it is.

Hue City Centre shopping is renowned for the authenticity of its souvenirs making it a super place for the avid shopper. One item which you will see prominently displayed is the Non; this is a hat which looks like an inverted triangle. The Non is, in addition to being very practical, a must buy gift to take home. These hats each have a poem written on them which can only be read when the Non is held to the light. Your Vietnamese host would consider it a great honour to be gifted a Non when you leave.
