There are many amazing parts to modern technology and even technology that has been in use for many decades. Instruments such as inclinometers are used in many applications such as to create an artificial horizon in an airplane right through to being used in many of the new computer games. They are also used in car security systems and cameras and anywhere else that slope or tilt needs to be measured.

For instance, they are used to measure the list and roll of a ship at sea, the angle of a ski slope, the boom angle of a crane, the angle of drilling in mining and even measuring the range of motion in the joints of a body, not to mention many other applications.

Rotary encoders are devices that convert the motion of a shaft or axle into digital or analogue code. This provides information about the movement that is necessary for measuring and testing distance, speed, position and RPM. Absolute encoder give a digital code for each and every angle of a shaft. They can be either mechanical or optical.

An incremental encoder may sound like something complicated to the uninitiated, but you may be surprised to know that you use one every time you turn the volume of your car stereo up or down. They are used to track motion and determine velocity and position.

Similarly, the serial encoder is used in many applications to do with computers, MP3s and various other modern gadgets in converting video and audio files into the format needed to play on your device. An interface module is installed in a computer to provide a fast Ethernet fibre port, thus allowing a high speed connection to an end station, a local server or a network infrastructure. Thus, even though many people may not have heard of any of these things, they actually do use them in their day-to-day life.
