Hotels in Amsterdam City centre are ideally located to access the wide range of activities that are on offer in this city. There is so much to see and do here that you will be hard-pressed to fit it all in within a single visit.

Exploring the Canals

There is a range of different canal tours on offer, from the hop-on/hop-off river bus service to romantic candlelit dinner cruises. You can also hire a boat (no prior experience necessary) and explore the canals at your leisure. Make sure you take a good map as Amsterdam’s canals can be very confusing. If you are a bit nervous about your skippering skills, you can hire a pedal boat and just pedal around until you have had enough and leave the pedal boat at the next available jetty.

Museums and Buildings

Amsterdam has some of the world’s best museums including the Rijksmuseum, due to fully reopen in 2013 but showing some of the finest Dutch masterpieces. The Van Gogh Museum has one of the best collections of the troubled artist’s work anywhere in the world. For something a little more unusual, Amsterdam is one of the few cities that can list a Pianola Museum among its museums. Pianolas are pianos that play themselves using pre-punched rolls of music and as well as the pianolas themselves, the museum also boats over 25,000 rolls of music.

The Nieuwe Kerk dates back to medieval times and has a stunning pulpit that is intricately carved with delightful angels and cherubs. The altar stands over 10 metres tall and was carved over 20 years in the 17th Century by Albert Vinckenbrinck. The Schreierstoren is the city’s oldest defence tower and dates back to the 15th Century. This is where sailors traditionally bid farewell to their wives and sweethearts before going to sea and is also where Henry Hudson set off in 1609 to what was then New Amsterdam and is now better known as New York.
