Sodium Lauryl sulphate or SLS is one of the most common ingredients which is used in beauty products, but the sad news is it is an ester of sulphuric acid which is commonly known as monododecyl ester sodium salt. Research done by The American College of Toxicology (ACT) has concluded that SLS are irritants in nature, 0.5% of SLS in soaps can cause mild irritation while 30% in ingredients can cause high irritation to the skin.

During the 1990’s scientists found that these chemicals can cause serious health problems and affect vital organs including liver, lungs, heart, brain, etc. Consumers have to check for ingredients before they purchase natural beauty products.

(B)FDA Standards

Surprisingly, there are no specific FDA standards for beauty and skin care products. However, there are beauty products with USDA certification which means 95% of the ingredients used in the beauty products are organic and this shows the chemicals used in the product are minimal.

(C)Misleading labels

Organic beauty products can be made at home but unfortunately they cannot be used or stored for a long time. Commercially available organic products comes labeled ‘organic’ or ‘SLS free’ but there are no guarantee that these products are made from natural ingredients.

To avoid mistaking of labels it is good to check the ingredients and ensure they are free from chemicals. If it includes long chemical names it is not at all organic as the label suggests.

Best way to buy natural skin care products is to get from trustworthy resources be it is online or offline. Also inspect the complete list of ingredients used to manufacture organic skin care products. Ensure it is free from substances such as mineral oil, petrolatum, glycerin propylene glycol, fragrances and other type of substances.

If you are going to apply the beauty product for the first time then it is good to test it in a small portion of the skin. If it does not irritate then it can be applied to other parts of the skin and face.
