Sedation Dentistry for Nervous Patients
Have you been avoiding going to the dentist because you are afraid? Does the thought of getting even a routine checkup make your heart race and your palms sweat? There are many reasons people are afraid of dentists and dental exams.
- Traumatic childhood or adult experiences.
- TMJ that causes pain and inability to keep your mouth open for long periods.
- Fear of needles.
- A very strong gag reflex.
- Highly sensitive teeth.
Neglecting the health of your teeth and gums is not good for you. Not only can it be painful to have cavities, it can jeopardize your health. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, pre-term labor, and diabetes to name a few. The bacteria in your mouth seeps into your blood stream causing problems like those above and even more.
There is a solution for people who are afraid of seeing the dentist. Sedation dentistry is a way to make your dental visit less stressful than you ever thought it could be. During an initial consultation, your dentist will explain what sedation dentistry can do for you. Use it for procedures like:
- Getting cavities filled.
- Having a root canal.
- Insertion of dental implants.
No needles or IV’s are required. There are dentists specially trained to sedate you through common prescription medications. You will take a small pill about an hour before your dental appointment. It is important to arrange for transportation to and from the dentist’s office as you will not be able to drive at all.
When you get to the office you will be extremely drowsy. The staff will take you into the examination area, put you into a comfortable chair and put a device to monitor your vital signs on your finger. You will not be asleep even though it might seem that way to you.
While you are sedated, you will be completely able to respond to the dentists questions and able to communicate anything you need to. Depending on the length of the procedure, you may be sedated anywhere from two to eight hours.
You will be completely relaxed during the entire procedure and will not experience any pain. While you may remember a little about the office visit, most people report that they do not remember anything at all including the sounds and smells.
Sedation dentistry is not used on children. The appropriate ages are rom 18 and up. During your consultation you will be fully screened for any health conditions to make sure you are a candidate for sedation.
Stop putting your visit to the dentist off again and again. With sedation, you will not have fear of the dentist ever again.
