Beatriz Armendariz, a well qualified professional, holds years of experience in serving as a Lecturer at several
prestigious educational institutions. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Instituto Tecnológico
Autónomo de Mexico (ITAM), Mexico. She later joined the University of Cambridge, UK, and thereby completed her
M. Phil in Economics in 1986. Besides, she also holds a doctorate in Economics from EHESS, Paris, France, with
Dissertation on “Foreign Debt Negotiations: An Historical and Theoretical Analysis”.

Beatriz Armendariz is the Founding Member of Grameen Credit Agricole Microfinance
Foundation, Paris, and also serves on its Board of Directors. Apart from this, she is a Research Fellow and Member
of the Scientific Committee for the Center for European Research in Microfinance (CERMi). From 2010 to 2011, she
served as a Senior Lecturer in Economics, University College London, United Kingdom. Besides, she was also a
Lecturer in Economics at Harvard University, USA.

Over the course of her career, Beatriz Armendariz has held several prominent positions at several reputed
educational institutions. From 2007 to 2008, she was a Visiting Professor at Solvay Brussels School of Economics,
Business, and Management, Université Libre de Bruxelles. Brussels, Belgium. Apart from this, she served as a
Research Associate for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Development Centre,
Paris, France, from 1989 to 1991. Besides, Beatriz also worked as a Teaching Assistant at ITAM; Research Officer at
INEGI (Mexico); Visiting Scholar in Economics Department of MIT, Cambridge; Lecturer in Economics at London
School of Economics; Visiting Professor at Toulouse School of Economics (France); and as Lecturer in Economics at
University College London, UK.
Co-Authored The Economics of Microfinance, First Edition (2005)
Beatriz Armendariz has
significantly contributed in a large number of publications. She co-authored The Economics of Microfinance, First
Edition (2005), and Second Edition (2010), with Jonathan Morduch. Apart from this, along with Ariane Szafarz, she
has made a significant contribution in the paper, “Microfinance Mission Drift?” This paper highlights the poorly
understood phenomenon in microfinance which is often referred to as a “mission drift”, i.e. a tendency reviewed by
several microfinance institutions to extend larger average loan sizes in the process of scaling – up.
Conferred “Brains Back in Brussels” Research Grant
Beatriz Armendariz was conferred the “Brains Back in Brussels” research grant by the Government of Brussels,
Belgium. Besides, she is also the (2006-2007) recipient of the Raul Bailleres Academic Award”, given by ITAM
Mexico, D.F., Mexico.
