Indian Airlines and Air India - Two Brands Come Together
For decades since the day of its independence, India had two airlines which were owned and operated by the Indian Government. First was Air India, developed to serve the passengers traveling to the international destinations and the second was, Indian Airlines that served the passengers traveling to the domestic destinations.
The two airlines though started with much fanfare and financial backing, saw a drop in their performance in the recent times. The two airlineswere restricted by the bureaucratic shackles that tied them up.
With the introduction of private players offering cheap airline fares Indian Airlines specially faced a lot of competition. As a solution the government decided to merge both the entities together. Though at first the decisions met with a negative response, the amalgamation of the two airlines happened on March 1, 2007.
Following the merger the airlines are now known as a single company; The National Aviation Company of India Limited. It'sheadquarters are located at Airlines House, 113 GurudwaraRakabganj Road, New Delhi. The National Aviation Company of India Limitedcorporate office is located at Mumbai.
After the merger efforts have been made to evolve a combined identity. The operational brand name is still the very popular and commonly used name, Air India. Similarly Air India's logo The Maharaja is still the airline's mascot. The logo was changed to the present one as both the airlines are now designed to cater to the public with value represented by the logo. It is a very important move to give the new identity of the airlines a solid ground to work from. This is a move applauded by a lot of professionals in the advertising and branding industry.
The newly evolved entity has not only seen a number of changes in the company's operating model. There is much less government control. This has offered much more agility to the company and can actually help to churn better results than the ones that were being experienced by the two airlines separately.
Another important point that is to be noted here is that the merger of the two airlines further pushed the two companies to also combine their best practices. One of the best results of this action has been the reduction in the overall operational cost of the newly formed National Aviation Company of India Limited. There also has been a lot of savings in the administrative cost. The golden days of state owned aviation have come back.
